I didn't know if I should start this under Running Game or formations, but I would be interested in hearing thoughts about option from split backs. We are primarily an I team, but if you lack a true Fullback, split backs are a great way to hit the hole faster with Inside Veer and Outside Veer. Any thoughts on Weaknesses/Strengths of Splitbacks for option?

I have run the veer out of split backs. Yes, it is a much quicker way to run the veer; however, there will always be a strong and a weak side. Also, you are forced to combo block the 3-technique away from the tight end. In my studies of running the midline and veer, the best formation from which to run the option is the double slot.

Coach, We run splitbacks and run the Mid, ISV, and OSV from it. Since we see more 5 fronts than 4 fronts, we tend to run the ISV and OSV more than the Mid. The main thing I would emphasize concerning your formation choice would be to really look at splitbacks if OSV is in your plans. I don't know of another formation that allows you to run OSV quite as well, unless you count the offset I (which limits your choices for a backside check- optionwise, that is). If you don't think you will run the OSV that much, then the I or Flex might be better for you in the long run. But anytime I see a 52 or 62 defense I CAN'T WAIT to hit them with OSV... it's been that good to us. Coach Smith coach.steve.smith@gmail.com www.veersite.com

Coach SMith,
I agree with what you are saying...i know here in Virginia...there are MAYBE 3 veer teams in the whole state....so that brings a number of problems and if you don't have an experienced veer staff, your gonna have troubles because you can't coach every position......but I think that your gonna see the Split backs come back because you don't have to teach all the motions like you do in the flex bone, and so many defenses are concerned about getting up the field ,it just makes it gravy for a hard hitting split back team......Anyway, hope this helped !
