Coaches, We are currently rethinking our pass game. I would like your three best routes off of play action w/ split backs, TE, Flanker strong side, and X weak. We would like to keep to a 3 step drop if possible. Thanks for any help.

You really need more than 3 total so you can take advantage of various secondary adjustments to the option.
Okay, here are the Flanker passes, first.
To the TE/FL side: 1. Z Slant - the playaction pulls the psOLB/or Sky SS up for pitch and you throw in front of the cover 3 CB. 2. Z Fade - this time it's a Cloud roll or cover 2 - hit the Z "in the hole" before the SS overlaps.
Here's the TE plays with play action to him and the FL. 1. Y Hot - the generic "pop pass" to the TE who inside releases. Takes advantage of over agressive ILB wanting to plug B or C gap 2. Y Trail(or Banana or ARC, or whatever- TE arc releases like on ISV but keeps going wide... 10 to 15 yards wide while the FL runs a Go route to run off the CB. QB drops it in for the TE if he has to. This takes more time -like a 5 step 3. Y Seam - TE arcs for 3 steps then is up the field reading the SS... rules are "if SS is deep, then I creep, if he's short, I'm long, and if he crosses my face, I cross his face (Post)... this play also takes a bit more time. We also run this to a slot with the inside reciever having the same rules as the TE would have... we just call it Seam if its to the slot.
Our last TE playaction is with playaction away from him. this is something we use vs a rolling coverage where the safety away from the run is trying to get back to his 3rd. We run a backside seam/skinny post with him getting behind the retreating safely and in front of the CB. We will also run this to the TE with playaction to a slot vs cover 3.
We have 2 playacitons to the single rec, X. The first is X Slant, just like the Z Slant. Not bad vs a cover 3 look with the secondary pre-rolled to the TE/FL. The other is a backside Post/Dig to him with play action away. It is a longer developing play as well.
On our "3 step" slants, the QB fakes down the line (getting low) and then raises up and throws it. On the longer ones, he does the same, but then ads a 3 step drop before throwing .
Well, that's our playaction, Coach, hope it helps!
Coach Smith
