OK all you O line coaches, which system do you teach for blocking the option, zone or assignment (man)? I'm talking about high school kids. I'm a former player(high school and college) and have been coaching for a while. I have played and coached with both systems. I'd like to know what you guys think and your reasons for it. I'll post mine at a later time. Thanks.

Coach,
We use a combination of both. On Inside Veer and Midline we use man blocking with zone principles -- for example the PST's rule is to veer for PSLB, but he will wash down a 5 tech. that pinches across his face.
When we have a good QB, which we will have this coming year, one of my favorite plays is the Belly Zone Option out of double slot. It is full zone blocking up front, leaving the force player for the option. Provides all the benefits of the stretch play without having to make the toughest block. QB reverses, gets depth, and thinks "run". We also zone block our jet sweep play and these two plays are our answer to teams that try to blitz our Inside Veer and Midline Plays. The initial action of the Belly Zone Option lends itself to multiple play-action passes, which Air Force has shown over the years.

I have taught mine to run a path and anything that cross that path belongs to them. I also tell them that usually which defender will cross there path and who to look for. I tell them your like a train on the tracks if it gets on the tracks run it over. This is more of an integration of the two schemes.
