How do you teach your QB to read the backside DE. I teach to look for the outside ear hole of the helmet. If you see it pull if not give. I don't believe a DE can catch my back unless he turns and runs down the line and to do that he has to turn his head. I have heard some coaches say read the outsied shoulder, if the de flows inside of your mid line, and some just say if he runs down the line with nothing specific about the read. www.parkdalefootball.bravehost.comparkdalefootball@yahoo.com

We didnt let ours read the backside de. Our head coach would see it and come back with the QB counter.

We don't run much shot gun, but I think on a gun zone play, reading the backside end is essential to keeping him honest. If your QB is an athlete, the big play potential is always there as well. The "ear hole" rule you described is probably the best way I've heard it, CoachF.

I am talking about the counter. We really didnt run a zone play. We havent been in this offense very long.

If he crosses the qb elbow on the ride when the qb has his away from the de arm cross his body, if the de is inside of that, pull it and run
