What methods do you coaches use to communicate the type of motion you want to run? This seems especially important when running from double slot.

We teach motion with the play. From double slot when we call inside veer, we teach the opposite hb to go in motion a count before the ball is snapped and run his pitch course.
On midline we teach the ps hb to turn-motion ( faking motion that looks like inside veer and turn and lead up inside past the dive key and block for the QB - blocking LBer to FS.
If we don't want motion at all we call "RED" in the huddle and snap the ball with the players having to execute their assignment at the snap. RED reminds our players to STOP!
I have found this to work the best for us. Also cuts down on verbage in the playcalling.

We actually say short motion after calling the play, long motion for the slot to go across LOS and Whirly for Mid line and false motion.

Coach,
I'm a big believer in motion, i think its especially effective when runniing the split backs veer offense....you can really get some formation mismatches...especially if you are willing to let your tight end be the pitch back in some instances....

Houston, I am interested in your motion from split backs and how you use the TE for a pitch option. Would ypu either email me or post some of what you do? Thanks Coach
