I realize there is a playaction section on this site, but for Double Slot specifically, what pass concepts/main routes do you need. I feel I've learned a lot about this formation in a brief time from you guys, so again thanks for all of the helpful info and suggestions.

One route concept that I think is a must for any double slot/flexbone team is the Slot back wheel. The wheel route combined with either a curl or a post by the WR is lethal. With those two routes by the WR and the Slot, you put the Corner in a BAD situation. You should run this combo with your Veer playaction and with your sprint out series. One great way to run this, although I never have coached it this way, is to to play action one way, and throw the wheel post combo to the backside of the Play action. When we ran it correctly, I have NEVER seen anyone cover the Post Wheel combo. We may not have had time to throw, but our routes were open. Again, I think this combo is a must for any flexbone/double slot team.

A great play si to run the run action and throw a backside pop pass to the SE who runs a sight adjusted route to the hole beneath the S and behind the LBs playing run. Ther eis always some opening there, reps and timing allow the SE and the QB to find it and each other.

wolverine55,
We believe that the keys to the play action game is (1) find out what defender is overplaying the option and (2) design the routes to look similar to the perimeter schemes.
Our base perimeter scheme is "stalk." The PSWR stalks the CB and the PSHB (slotback) stalks the near deep safety. Our base play action is "seam." The PSWR and PSHB run a stalk and go. The WR must get outside the numbers; the HB must get 1-2 yards outside the hash, assuming we are running the play from the MOF. The QB's progression is HB to WR. The coach responsible for watching the playside DB's recommends this play when either the PSCB or PS safety is cheating. This was our most successful play action, by far.

Here's what we do. We call the playside routes by numbers. Ex: 2-89 (8 route is a post, 9 is a wheel). 2 is to our right side and indicates BOB protection with C working weak and FB working strong. Our numbering works outside in. Outside receiver is running the post, slot has the wheel. The backside is going to be our hot route side, if we have a number mismatch or read blitz presnap. Our outside receiver on the BS is going to run a slant, the inside receiver runs through the free safety. We keep it as simple and unwordy as possible. Ex: Split 2-89...can't get much easier than that.

All of the before mentioned play action passes off of the option fake are awesome and we utilize them all.
We also think it is important and very simplistic to execute a 3 step drop/90 series when running the double slot offense. We run the hitch, quick out, slant, and fade as our base routes - the playside slot has a complementary route, the FB blocks the playside edge, and the backside slot shuffles down inside to complete the backside of the protection. We can also run (double moves) hitch-and-go, slant-and-go, out-and-up, and the fade-stop (on the goalline). When we widen a slot we run some read routes - double slant (read the flat player), slot spin (when the flat player begins to jump the slot's shoot/arrow route.
