What is the pitch relationship you guys teach out of double slot? In the past I have taught the HB to run to a land mark, but w/o numbers on the field, that become too confusing. What do you think?

Coach,
We teach our HB's to get into a 7x1 pitch relationship. We encourage our QB's to pitch the ball parallel to the LOS so the HB catches it with his shoulders square to the LOS. Just our way.

What type of pitch does your QB use? I would think basketball would be the only way yo get the ball that far out.

we teach the motion to the heals of the FB and the Slot is to run at the heals of the X for land marks, if we have no X then we run to the imaginary landmark where the x would be, the relationship is 4 x 1, I believe and the pitch is thumbs down and fingertips. We try to pitch the ball slightly backward attacking the inside shoulder of the force man looking for the outside shoulder. If he takes the QB we breakdown, pitch and absorb the blow... hope this helps

We taught similar to what Weidner was talking about, that our WB should arc to about a yard behind the FB's rear foot. We had him stay flat from there and not turn up until he was "one, one thousand, two" past the snap point which usually put him in a 5x1 or 6x1 relationship with the QB. And if you teach proper footwork on the pitch you can ten-twelve yards out of the "thumb down, fingers out" style of pitch. Instead of the "basketball" push, you can also teach him the two handed rugby method, which we used when our QB had a broken pinky. You run two hands on the ball like normal, and you have to pitch a little sooner in the read. Your QB brings the ball to his offside hip, and then snaps it across his body while stepping off his back foot AWAY from pitch man, creating a whip effect. The hands are under the ball with the thumbs pointing towards the pitch man. Key point is making the backside elbow comes UP almost or actually even with shoulder. The other fun thing with this method, is FAKING the pitch actually moves the QB in such a manner that it is really easy for him to juke most linemen. Hope this helps.
