Some comments I found in my "Notes" file:
"Best" Play vs. 46 Defense -
I am going to counter trey to the weak side vs. the 46. The play is called
"Pro Right 25 Counter trey"
Center = Down block to the Strong side DT
Split Guard = Down block to the Nose
Split tackle = Down block on to the end
Tight guard = pull and either "kick" or "log" the "Q"
Tight Tackle = Pull up inside if the Tight guard kicked, or out side if he
logged.
Tight tailback = counter step right (open, gather, plant and go) read the
block to the split side.
Split tailback = 45 in for the pulling tackle watch for "B" blitz.
-------------------------
If you want to beat the 46, you have to possibly do two things that might change your offense. First use 3 WR sets to unbalance the 46 and cause one or more run stopping LB's to do something unfamiliar, pass defend. Pass the ball to take advantage of the lack of secondary caused by the alignment, but make sure you keep the two backs or the TE and Running Back back to block because the pass rush is tremendous 9 (Especially if the D is inspired). Second thing you can do is to use two TE sets which will allow you to run the ball (Off- Tackle Traps) and also allow you to pass block w/ 8 people. The secondary will still be exposed to the deep pass. I used this Defense successfully against opponents that outweighed our line by 100 pounds (really), but the things mentioned above made me nervous as a D Coordinator. Sincerly, Matt Fischer
--------------------------------
The weak side of the 46 plays into the FLY offense's hand.
The main philosophy is to "sweep till they weep" and the with our Fly
man in motion gives us 4 man against their 3 man weak. Any man coverage
that allows their CB to follow or any type of rotation or slide opens up the
pass game to strong side. Add in the misdirection and trap game the FLY offense
has the 46 defense spinning around like a bunch of dancing bears.
PST - Zone block to second level. If you can reach DE push
him anywhere he wants to go. Just keep contact.
PSG - Zone to Second Level- Rip or swim past DL
C - Zone
OSG - Zone
OST - Zone to second level
TE - Zone
X - Stalk CB
H - Fake quick pitch/belly/trap
F - Drive block off PST block look for DE push him where he
wants go keep
contact
Z - Fly motion, throttle behind FB read his block look
outside first then cut
back.
QB - Midline give fly, run boot
