Coaches, I'm new to the veer offense and am looking forward to running it. I just got J. Wacker's book and he states that his offense is built around three plays: OSV, Lead (Speed) Option, and Counter Option, what are your opinions on the best plays run from split backs?

I think you are dead on with your opinion. OSV can break HUGE. The Counter Keeps the defense honest and the Load-Lead-Speed Option overloads the defense to one side. IMO, the most important thing that you can have off of the option is the complimentary play-action pass. These are almost a surefire score if properly setup. I think Wacker said they scored 18 touchdowns off of play action when they only threw the ball 20% of the time. My philosophy is to run, run, run, run. Then run again when they expect pass and then hit-em with play-action on first down for a score. Welcome to the team.

Does anyone feel that you have to have a play that options a 3 technique? why or why not. Is the mid-line and/or inside belly (double dive) a normal series that split back teams use?

Inside Veer-Outside Veer-Trap-Trap Option... that basically attacks the whole field.

I really believe you can get by with that if you emphacize your playaction, 3-step, and rollout passing attack.

Coach,
I've been coaching split backs veer football for a while now and these are the components that i think you need to have a successful running game:
Inside Veer Mid-line Option Outside Veer Lead Option Belly Belly Option Counter Trey Trap Kick Play Lead Draw
These are the plays that we really concentrate on and rep and rep and rep.....you can't run option every play, because your quarterback needs a break....thats why we have our power game (Kick, Lead draw is EXCELLENT...basically same thing as ISO, but back has better angles to get upfield) and you must have counter game....hence, trap / counter trey.......
hope this helped...
